Frosts down to -2°C, and in some places down to -9°C, which have been observed in recent days in the northern, eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, have led to significant damage to wheat, barley, rapeseed and peas, said Sergiy Avramenko, chief researcher at the Yuriev Institute of Plant Production of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, ASAP Agri reported on May 17 in its Telegram channel.
According to the scientist, winter wheat crops that were still in the heading stage may have losses of 20-30%, while those that were already at the harvesting stage will potentially have a higher level of losses.
“A similar situation is observed with rapeseed crops. Pea crops will also suffer significant losses due to frosts, as the frosts hit the crops in the flowering stage,” Mr. Avramenko said.
At the same time, he added that the situation in the central part of Ukraine and in the western regions is better, as there were no such severe frosts.
“But it should be borne in mind that these regions also have smaller sown areas,” the scientist said.
